What is a common symptom of exposure to high radiation levels?

Exposure to high levels of radiation can result in a range of acute health effects, commonly referred to as acute radiation syndrome (ARS). One of the hallmark symptoms of ARS is gastrointestinal distress, which includes nausea and vomiting. This response is due to the radiation's impact on rapidly dividing cells, such as those in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. When the cells are damaged or destroyed, it leads to the sensations of nausea and the possibility of vomiting.

The onset of these symptoms typically occurs within a short period after significant exposure, often within minutes to hours, reflecting the severity of the radiation exposure. While other symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, skin burns, fatigue, and confusion, may also be associated with radiation exposure, nausea and vomiting are more directly linked to high levels of radiation and are considered telltale signs of significant radiation injury.
